- The Circle of Greed: Watching Rome Burn
by Mark Faulk I was recently compelled to contact a US Senator through his website email system. When I got to the part that read “Subject-----Please select-----“ something suddenly occurred to me. It was another in a continuing series of revelations about the scope of the issues that I, and others have been speaking out about for the past several years. As I looked over the list, I realized just how broad…and how deep…the problem of financial fraud runs.
I couldn’t settle on a single box to check, in fact, it would be easier to determine which boxes didn’t apply to what I consider to be the single most pressing issue that our country faces today, the issue of rampant corruption in a financial system that is built not to discourage but to facilitate the wholesale raping and pillaging of our country’s citizens and economic resources.
Is this a Crime issue? How about Banking? Economy? Social Security? Taxes? It’s obviously about Business, but the massive outflow of money into other countries (as well as into offshore tax havens like Belize, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands) through our financial markets could just as easily be about Foreign Affairs or Budget issues. And the lost jobs, revenue, and tax money certainly affects every underfunded area of our government, from Education, Labor, and Medicare to Housing and the Environment.
Out of 33 specific categories listed, I could only find nine that aren’t specifically affected in a negative way by the financial fraud, and as I’ve said, with the massive amounts of tax dollars stolen from the coffers of our cities, states, and nation, even those issues are most likely to at least be peripherally affected as well. In other words, this scandal reaches into every corner of America, and harms every citizen…well, at least every citizen who isn’t a millionaire several times over. And in the end, it will harm even the ultra-rich who now benefit from it, because they will find themselves walled-off in their gated communities looking over a country in ruins.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it until every last citizen gets it: This is our national disgrace. The built-in fraud, the rigged stock market system that acts as the pipeline for the rich to get richer while the rest of us go deeper into debt, will in the end be our country’s downfall. I believe we have a year, possibly two at the most, to at least begin the process of rebuilding our financial system into one where the game isn’t rigged in favor of the Wall Street casino. I believe that we have to act now to turn our country around, and that if we don’t, then we will be resigned to watch helplessly while the house of credit cards that we have built collapses around us.
This is our national disgrace, and in the end, it will be seen as the match that set Rome afire. The flames are now burning dangerously close to out-of-control. Once that happens, we as a nation will be resigned to fiddle while our country burns.
