- Tribute to a Lost Friend
   by Robin Buckallew

The following is in tribute to one of the Faulking Truth’s occasional guest writers, Hawkeye W. Lowery (1999-2009) who recently succumbed to cancer. He is, and will be, sorely missed.

Following the recent death of our beloved dog, my husband and I have been struggling to cope with the loss. The world has seemed strangely empty since he’s been gone. He wasn’t a thoroughbred; he was about half Corgi and half UFO (unidentified furry object), but he was a really class act. He had made many friends in his life, and most of our callers asked us about Hawkeye often even before checking on the state of our own health or wellbeing. He had friends from Texas to Nebraska, from California to Iowa, and even counted at least one European in his wide circle of well-wishers. He has left behind a large hole, a hole much larger than his short, squatty body. Over the past few weeks, I’ve stopped many times to reflect on the years with my little friend, and to go over once again all that I learned from him. Now, I would like to share with you some of the pieces of wisdom I acquired from my erstwhile canine companion.

    •    There is no crisis so big that it is worth interrupting a good nap.
    •    The postman is not to be trusted
    •    If it moves, growl at it
    •    If it moves again, bark at it.
    •    The newspaper boy is not to be trusted.
    •    Whenever anything goes wrong, lay your head in your paws and go to sleep.
    •    Mormons on the porch are not to be trusted.
    •    Once in a while, you need to slip out of your leash and run free.
    •    Girl Scouts selling cookies are not to be trusted.
    •    You should never be afraid to ask for what you want.
    •    Plumbers are not to be trusted.
    •    It’s all right to beg, so long as you remain dignified and not abject.
    •    Jehovah’s Witnesses are not to be trusted.
    •    Nothing beats a good scratch.
    •    Meter readers are not to be trusted.
    •    A walk in the evening makes everything better.
    •    Kids on bikes are not to be trusted.
    •    No route is so familiar that it isn’t worth exploring all over again.
    •    Trick or Treaters are not to be trusted.
    •    Don’t pester those who are smaller than you; only challenge those that are big enough that you gain something from it.
    •    Cats are not to be trusted.
    •    From time to time, you have to stop and smell the world around you.
    •    Squirrels are not to be trusted.
    •    Everything’s better when the pack is together.
    •    Rabbits are not to be trusted.
    •    When all else fails, find a nice warm sun spot, curl up, and go to sleep.
