- Two hearts beating as one
   by Mark Faulk

Shhhhhhhh!!!

If you're really quiet, you can hear the sound, like synchronicity, of two hearts beating in exact rhythm with each other.

thumpthump....thumpthump....thumpthump....

Sometimes I think that this is where the power to change the entire world lies....in those two single heartbeats that find each other, and decide, for whatever cosmic reason, to quit trying to go it alone, and simply give in to one another. To become a part of each other.....to BECOME each other.

I'm not necessarily talking about marriage here, or even most relationships. This is different, and it just happens of its own accord. It's the ultimate feeling of oneness....and of being connected to something other than yourself. It's a dream, a vision, a hallucination, a sharp intake of breath....a slight shudder when you just give up and let it in.

It's Heaven, Nirvana, and Shangrila all rolled into one. Unlike conventional relationships and ordinary commitments, this one is freeing.....so freeing that you feel as if you can fly, or better yet just leap.....and float weightlessly suspended about the Earth, looking down on gravity as if it was nothing more than a minor nuisance.

Like a feather that lay dormant for the longest time, just waiting for the right breeze to give it flight.

What if, instead of one leader, we had two. Two presidents, two spiritual leaders, two teachers, two minds and hearts linked together....beating in rhythm? And what if the people around them, who up until then were living their owns lives, struggling to keep their own rhythm in a one-on-one battle royale to the death with the rest of the universe, were suddenly caught up in the rhythm of those two hearts, and began to quietly adjust their own heartbeat to match those two single heartbeats?

thumpthump....thumpthump....thumpthump....

What if they realized what those two people discovered, that it's far easier to "go with the flow" than it is to fight the loneliness....the disconnectedness. I've seen it happen, but only for brief moments in time. Sometimes it's triggered by music, the beat of the music becomes the shared heartbeat of the audience, and they feel....connected. Other times, it's simply that those around are sucked in by the magic that happens when two people become one, and, sensing the feeling of completeness that those two hearts share, they join them....in exact rhythm with each other.

Forget two heads.....it's two hearts that are better than one.

As we head once again into a new year, with new hopes and an eye towards a better future, this is my dream:

One day, two people connect in the most intense merging of two heartbeats that our insignificant little planet has ever felt, and instead of allowing the rest of the world, or reality, or circumstance, or their own day-to-day existence to come between them, they just stop and listen....shhhhhhh!....and give in to the connection. And another person happening by is caught up in the moment, and feeling the perfect contrast of intensity and calmness, their heart begins to beat in rhythm to the first two heartbeats.

thumpthump....thumpthump....thumpthump....

And another person, feeling lost and lonely, and longing for something they had begun to think didn't even exist, is pulled into the rhythm as well. A rhythm that makes gravity feel like.....nothing more than a minor nuisance.

And on and on....until it crosses boundaries and borders, and traverses rivers and even oceans, until finally, the entire world is caught up in the rhythm, and every single person becomes a part of every other person.

Every single person BECOMES every other person.

Imagine it....someone you love stubs their toe...and you put on a bandaid. Someone across the world goes without dinner...and you feel the need to feed them to ease the gnawing in the pit of your own stomach. Someone feels lonely...and your heart aches from the longing. Every single person would have to at least try to help others, because when they hurt....you hurt with them.

And when you love....they love too. And your hearts beat in unison, in exact rhythm.

Two hearts beating as one....

thumpthump....thumpthump....thumpthump....

Shhhhhhhh!!!
