  Commentary Too  -  Aug 1, 2006  -  Printable Version
- A Pound of Flesh
   by Down the Middle

You never forget the sound…the subdued but most eerie, high-pitched “whine”, gone spinning past your ear. Gone spinning past your ear before you realize it’s coming, and leaving you with the realization that a few inches of space was all the difference between life and death. I have heard that sound twice, in my life…and I hope to never hear it again. Unfortunately, it’s beginning to look as though our children will be hearing…and seeing much worse.

Late reports have Israeli engineers moving forward, prepping the way for an assault of mechanized units to drive yet deeper into southern Lebanon. If I was convinced that this was only about eradicating Hezbollah, maybe I could write it off as just another “small” war…though, no war is never small for the young who have to fight it.

I should think by now, it would be more than obvious to everyone that this war is not going away. Many seem to believe that a truce is eminent, as soon as Israel finishes “dealing” with Hezbollah…or at least, that is what we are expected to believe, via our government’s propaganda machine, network news.

The fact is, this war has been going on ever since the middle of the last century, with no end in sight, other than the complete annihilation of one side or the other, and it’s not about to change now. As much as I would like to believe that a righteous settlement could somehow emerge from this 3600 year-old blood feud, I am too old a pessimist…or perhaps, too much a realist to place my bet on such long odds.

Aside from the murderous carnage being levied against the innocent civilians of Lebanon in the last month, we have observed numerous “close calls” of Israeli air strikes on the frontier of Syria. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has put his entire military on its highest level of alert, seemingly expecting, as I, that it is now just a matter of time before the IDF encroaches upon its sovereignty, to which Syria will be forced to reply. The moment this happens, Iran…and then the U.S., will be fully joined in open war.

For those who are counting on a “blue-helmeted” truce, I would point to the history of the region and the history of the U.N. itself. This “league of nations” has seldom enjoyed any great successes with warring nations, demanding their “pound of flesh”. At best, they have only produced small inconveniences to the aggressors on the battlefields, usually by delaying the inevitable resumption of hostilities…and at worse, have even fled the field, unwilling to chance their own demise for countries in which they have no personal stake.

If Israel has a right to their own homeland, then surely the Palestinians have that same right. That is what this war of fifty plus years is about. As to where the lines should be drawn, my opinion is no more valuable than another.

I only know that war is murder on a mass scale, snatching the life away from so many who fight it, for so few who order it.

Where is my God? Did I not fight for He
Or was it my country? Had they lied, to me?
Was not his life, I wanted…only mine.
I just wanted to live, so I ended his time.
