Forget Doctor Octopus.... Who's afraid of Leatherface?....Gollum is a wuss.... The real movie villain of the year? George W. Bush. The "honor", bestowed on Bush by readers of Britain's Total Film Magazine, was possibly "a little bit tongue in cheek", according to editor Matt Muellar, "but they are also saying that Bush was very scary in 'Fahrenheit 9/11". I read this article in "The Village Voice", and thought it was funny. For about five seconds. Then, a chill went down my spine, as if a real life villain had just entered the room. I began to think about the last four years: the war in Iraq, the systematic dismantling of our Constitution, the massive shift of wealth from the poor and middle class to the ultra-wealthy, the record oil and gas prices, the huge increase in prescription drug costs while we prohibit buying drugs from other countries, the outsourcing of our jobs, the erosion of our evironmental policies.....and on and on and on. Is there any villain, real or fictitious, that can claim these kind of devious acts? I began to wonder if the Brits were truly serious about their opinion. Then, I noticed another headline on the same page: "Civilian death toll in Iraq exceeds 100,000". It contained this chilling statement: "Tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed in violence since the U.S.-led invasion last year, American public health experts have calculated in a report that estimates there were 100,000 'excess deaths' in 18 months. The rise in the death rate was mainly due to violence and much of it was caused by U.S. air strikes on towns and cities." Let me repeat that, in case you weren't paying attention: "much of it was caused by U.S. air strikes on towns and cities". 100,000 deaths that would not have happened if it wasn't for the "year's top film villain" George W. Bush. This is no joke. This is not an ugly guy in a mask in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" offing a few people in the fantasyworld of the movies, this is reality. Harsh, cold reality. And to make it worse, I've heard the right wing talk show hosts spout off on a regular basis about our right to "level the whole damn country". Do they actually believe that it's okay to kill innocent people en masse in the name of "liberation" and "freedom", much less in the name of "God"? Forget the WMD debacle, IT'S NOT OKAY TO KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Period. Make no mistake about this, this is not terrorists, or even terrorist sympathizers we're talking about here, these are innocent victims, no different than your family or mine. They did not deserve to die, especially in a war that shouldn't have been waged in the first place. Here's the Faulking Truth: If any American (and, sadly, there appear to be more than a few) believes that the loss of 100,000 (and counting) civilian casualties is justified by the "cause", then they are WRONG. This has gone far enough. It's time, once and for all, to retake the moral high ground, and to demand that, in the future, the villains will be confined to the movie screen. And here's the scariest part: Re-elect George W. Bush next Tuesday, and there will be a sequel. At this rate, 100,000 deaths will become over 350,000 civilian deaths over the next four years. And in the movies, the violence in the second film always tops the original. Are we really ready for "George W. Bush II - The Sequel"?
