I took my two daughters, Rachel and Kelsey, to see Kurt Vonnegut back in 2003, when he lectured at Oklahoma City University. It was free, but even if I had spent a month's salary to hear him speak, it would have been worth every damn penny.
The man is our country's national living treasure.
Just last night, I pulled out the copy of "Sirens of Titan" that I had purchased there....it was at least my third copy, having "loaned out" other copies to friends (word of advice: if you want to keep your Vonnegut library intact, DO NOT loan out them out to friends....you will never see them again.)
I was happy to see, three years later, that Vonnegut had included parts of his speeches in his new book "A Man Without a Country." If you haven't read it, go buy it now. As for my copy, I loaned it to my brother Paul just last week. I fear that I'll never see it again.
Here are a couple of quotes from that evening that I jotted down in the front and back cover of "The Sirens of Titan":
"America is the only country where even the poor people are fat."
"I hate primitive people, because they're so stupid."
"If you really want to hurt your parents, and you don't have the nerve to be a homosexual, at least go into the arts."
And here's a quote from the main character in Vonnegut's final (and as yet unfinished) novel:
"I am a flaming neuter....me and 75% of all Roman Catholic Priests."
