Welcome to 2006, another new year, another symbolic ending, and yet another chance to forge a fresh beginning. Like most people, I've already begun to list the things I want to leave behind from the past year, and ponder the things I can do to truly make this year "better than the last". And like most people, I believe that it can be better, that I can be better. Yeah well, we'll see about that....only time will tell.
Over the past year, I hope we've all added new friendships and emotional and spiritual connections, benefited in some way or another from our efforts, and learned at least a little from our mistakes. As for me, I hope I've done some small things that have helped one or two people over the past year, or even just made someone smile or feel a little bit better about themselves and the world around them for a fleeting moment, just as I know that there are so many who have helped me in one way or another.
Thank you for that.
Since I'm feeling all sentimental and mushy right now (yuck), I guess this would be as good a time as any to make a confession that might contradict some of my past rambling commentaries. I know I bitch about the internet undermining the intimacy in our lives, and bemoan the loss of "human touch" that the impersonal nature of conversing through a keyboard and a computer screen has brought about, but (are you ready for this?)...
...I love the internet.
In the almost two years since the inception of The Faulking Truth, I have "met" hundreds of fascinating and caring people in this bizarro universe called Cyberspace, and some of those relationships have blossomed into true caring and loving friendships. A few have even moved beyond the confines of words on computer into "real life" connections, just like the ones that I have claimed can't be forged in this alternate reality. And in the past few weeks since I set up The Faulking Truth's MySpace site, I've already added a few new names to the evergrowing list of "people who I give a damn about".
I take it all back. As long as it comes from the heart, I guess that feelings typed on a keyboard and launched into the void, and latched onto by some like-minded soul on the opposite end of lordknowswhere, can be just as valid as many "real world" friendships. As long as we don't forget how to sit close together in a room, hold hands, kiss, and share true moments of intimacy, lounge on our front porches or in our backyards and converse and laugh with others face-to-face and eye-to-eye, then I guess it's okay to develop bonds in this foreign land where addresses become IP numbers, words become HTML sent by browsers through ISPs to all corners of the internet, and the most intimate form of bonding is something called an "IM". As long as the end result is that you've touched someone else in some positive way, then the route you take to arrive there doesn't really matter.
Love is where you find it....caring is caring, friendship is friendship.
And besides, where else can you wake up on New Year's morning in Oklahoma, USA, to a greeting written in Serbian from someone sitting in their living room in Yugoslavia?
