- Pope Dies of old Age
   by Mark Faulk

At the risk of appearing politically incorrect (if not downright sacrilegious), I have a question for those "in the know", when it comes to matters of the Pope. Why is the Pope such a celebrity, while the leaders of the other religious demoninations toil in relative obscurity? I realize that the Catholic Church is the single most popular religion of choice, but when combined, Protestants outnumber Catholics by a two to one margin.

I mean, I can understand why no one would know who the leader of the Quakers, who number a paltry 300,000 (not that's there's anything wrong with being a Quaker, either.....hey, I'm treading lightly here), is, but Jews, Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, and even some of those religious groups that society in general looks down upon, all boast some impressive numbers. I mean, there are over 14 million Jehovah's Witnesses, and I couldn't tell you who their leader is, and they show up at my front door nearly every week. Why aren't their leaders waving to the masses on TV every other day from the back of the Popemobile or the balcony of the Pope's loft apartment? Why do the Catholics get constant international media exposure, and Jehovah's Witnesses are reduced to handing out brochures door-to-door?

Okay, I'm not going to belabor the point here, because I do think it's a sad thing that the Pope has died, and also because I don't want to get struck down by lightning while it's sunny and 80 degrees outside. Let's face it, no one would believe that that was merely a freak accident. "Whoa, I wonder what THAT guy did to piss God off!"

I have read a few of the 7,000,000 articles about the Pope the past few days, but I have to confess (no pun intended) that I did skip over the one entitled "Pope's Cause of Death Revealed", because, let's face it, I could write that article in three words. HE WAS OLD!

I also finally turned off KOMA, Oklahoma City's radio station "on the right side of your dial", after obnoxious talk show host Tammy Bruce spent two hours on Friday morning telling us that the Pope was dead, and then Bill O'Reilly resurrected him an hour later. And if that little faux pas wasn't enough (surely those right-wing talk show hosts don't have THAT kind of power, do they?), then Michael Savage spent an hour telling us how "those Godless Democrats would have pulled the plug on the Pope already". Michael: kiss my ass, you mean-spirited hatemonger. Now if YOU were on life support....nah, that's too easy.

Anyway, I'm serious in adding my condolences to those who are mourning Pope John Paul, and I hope that you will forgive me for asking what many of you might think are stupid questions. In this day and age, one thing is true, we need all the moral and spiritual leaders we can get. And if anyone can send me a list of the world's OTHER spiritual leaders, I would be eternally grateful (again, no pun intended). A couple of hints: the leader of the Quakers isn't the guy on the front of the Quaker Oats box, and, no, President Bush doesn't qualify as a spiritual leader of any type, despite what Tammy "The Pope is Dead" Bruce might tell you. And that's the Faulking Truth
