by Mark Faulk As 99.999% of Americans sit on the outside looking in at the $50 million Presidential Inauguration, here are few things you can do to feel like you're more a part of the festivities.
For starters, here's a game every American can play (and you don't have to be a "Ranger" to participate (Ranger: n. Honorary name given to those who raised at least $200,000 for the Bush/Cheney re-election campaign.). Do a google search and find a list of contributors for the Bush inauguration, and then, see if you can connect yourself to the inauguration using the least number of people. Think of it as a Presidential Inauguration version of "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon".
Now, since hardly any real Americans have those kinds of connections, we'll allow ANY kind of connection. For instance, Texas oilman (and Oklahoma State University graduate) T. Boone Pickens not only donated $250,000 for the inauguration, he also gave $2.5 million to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and another $2.5 million to the pro-GOP organization Progress for America. Pickens also donated $10 million to help fund Oklahoma State's football stadium renovation, which was then re-christened Boone Pickens Stadium. And (are you still with me?), since I've been to a couple of OSU football games in the stadium since it was renamed, I'm only one Ranger away from shaking Bush's hand myself, and maybe even pinching Jenna Bush's ass as she slinks by in her emerald silk crepe gown with metallic leather banding and jeweled insets.
But, since I'm such a prominent American, I have another connection to the inauguration. A.G. Spanos, real estate developer and owner of the San Diego Chargers, gave $250,000 to the inauguration, and a whopping $5 million to Progress for America, AND donated $1 million towards the Republican National Convention. Here goes: A.G Spanos develops crappy apartment complexes all over America, and in the early 1980s, my company installed tile in about 3,000 of those apartments. So, I'm only a tile tub surround away from getting close enough to Vice President Cheney to have him tell me to "faulk off" (my words, not his, well, not EXACTLY his). And since millions of Americans have lived in A.G.s apartments, you're all invited!
So, there you go. See you at the Freedom Ball, I'll be the one in the pink tux and the Spongebob tie (see honey, I told you I'd find somewhere appropriate to wear it).
And finally, a few random thoughts as we enter the "Ball" stage of the inauguration (three down, seven more to go), where America is being sold to the highest bidders:
After 27 "freedoms" and 15 "liberties" in President Bush's inaugural address, and 10 inaugural balls, here's what American's think about Bush's second term, from an ongoing AOL poll:
How effective will Bush be in his second term?
Not at all 45%
Very 33%
Somewhat 21%
And after a speech that barely mentioned domestic policy (domestic: adj. of concern to or concerning the internal affairs of a nation), here's where Americans priorities are (from the same AOL poll):

Foreign policy 30%
And Iraq? According to a New York Times poll today, here's what Americans (American: n.
A native or inhabitant of America) think about the war in iraq:
Is the war in Iraq worth the cost?
Not worth it 52%
Worth it 40%
And from the same New York Times poll:
Do you approve of President Bush's handling of the economy?
Don't approve 54%
Approve 40%
And here's our parting trivia:
$50,000,000: Amount of money being spent on today's inauguration
$2,000: Amount FDR spent on the inauguration in 1945…about $20,000 in today's dollars
Who the hell voted for these guys anyway? Or, more to the point, who will admit to having voted for them in four years? To paraphrase President Ford (who would have thought we would miss THAT guy?) "Our long national nightmare has just begun". And that's the Faulking Truth.
