Blogfest 2005 - Oct 5, 2004 - Printable Version - The Vice-Presidential Debate Primer by Mark Faulk It's Tuesday, and I'm busy counting my blessings today......I got to spend the day trading "witty banter" (you heard me, I said "witty banter", shut up) with a friend, and enjoying every minute.....while others have it much harder than I ever have. For that, I'm thankful..... Three examples: Linda Webb, who has been struggling with cancer, after losing her two-year old daughter to a totally different type of cancer last year. With God's help, she is currently in remission. Instead of giving up, she and her husband Scott (along with their friends Toby Keith and Tricia Covel) started a foundation to help others facing the same type of situation. There are two articles about that on our site: "Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic Supports Ally's House" at www.faulkingtruth.com/Articles/GonzoCharity/1002.html and: "Toby Keith Turns Oklahoma City Concert into Toy Drive" www.faulkingtruth.com/Articles/GonzoCharity/1004.html Mike Taylor, a friend of mine who struggled with liver failure (not related to alcohol) for years. Another friend of mine, Kathy Reed, organized a series of fund-raisers to raise the money for a transplant...to the tune of $250,000. I was blessed to have been able to help organize a benefit concert with Aranda and Bryan Abrams, but Kathy did the real work. Two weeks ago, Mike finally got his new liver, and is doing fine. The doctors said the old one was so shot that it literally fell apart in their hands as they removed it. Ken Shade, who has struggled with MS for years, and recently wrote an article about the loss of his wife Karla to leukemia (entitled "This One is For the Nurses" at www.faulkingtruth.com/Articles/GuyWalksIntoBar/1006.html ). Ken has kept his sense of humor throughout his long ordeal, and never ceases to amaze me with his resiliency and compassion in the face of adversity. Read any of his work in his column "This Guy Walks into a Bar and Says...." and you'll see what I mean. A prayer out to those people, and anyone else dealing with struggles in their life. Tonight: We have a Vice-Presidential Debate tonight, which should go a little something like this....... SCENE 1 (lights up on stage, two men standing at separate podiums.... no, wait, sitting as if on a talk show....one tall, young, and boyishly handsome, the other, old and bitter: Edwards: "We need to bring the country back together, and quit being so divisive. Cheney: "You little prick....I'll show you divisive!" Edwards: "This isn't about you and me, it's about America, and which candidate will lead our country back to greatness." Cheney: "I'll show you greatness, you little punk. I'll drop a low-level nuke on your country ass!" Edwards: "Can't we just discuss the issues at hand, and put the negative politics behind us? It's time we all joined hands and worked as one to change our future." Cheney: "F*ck off, you son-of-a-b*tch. Come any closer, and I'll give you a little Abu Ghraib justice." FADE TO BLACK......and *SCENE* So, there you have it, now you don't even have to watch tonight. Sure, the script might deviate a bit from that, but the overall tone will undoubtedly be the same. Enjoy. One for the Road: Here's one that a friend of my daughter's just told me (thanks, Chelsea): If the President were gay, would his husband be the first man? Just something to ponder while watching the debate tonight. (Editor's note: This is an entry from The Faulking Truth blog, appropriately entitled "Blogfest 2005".
